Species Description
**Description:** Survivors of a once-mighty forest giant; typically grow as multi-stemmed shrubs or small trees before blight strikes.
**Size:** Rarely exceeds 15–20 feet before the main stem dies back.
**Conservation:** Rare / Species of Concern. Persist in the understory using energy from ancient root systems. Hybridization efforts are underway for restoration.
**Habitat:** Well-drained upland forests of the plateau.
