**Description:** The "Doodlebug" larva builds cone-shaped pits in sand to trap ants. The adult resembles a clumsy, large-winged dragonfly.
**Size:** Larvae are 0.5 inches; adults have a 2.5-inch wingspan.
**Behavior:** The larva hides at the bottom of a sand pit and hurls sand at falling ants to knock them into its jaws.
**Life Cycle:** Can spend three years in the "Doodlebug" stage before emerging as a short-lived winged adult.
**Habitat:** Dry, sandy soil protected from rain, such as beneath rock overhangs at Rimrock.
