American Black Duck

Species Description
**Description:** A dark, chocolate-brown duck resembling a Mallard but with a pale grayish-brown head and bright yellow-green beak.
**Size & Weight:** 21–23 inches long. Weighs 2–3 lbs.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Males have a brighter yellow beak; females have a duller, olive beak with black spotting.
**Behavior:** Shy "dabbling" ducks that tip their tails up to eat. In flight, their white underwings contrast sharply with their dark bodies.
**Habitat:** Quiet beaver ponds and secluded backwaters of the Allegheny.
