Species Description
**Description:** Pennsylvania’s state fish; features dark green wavy patterns (vermiculations) and red spots with blue halos.
**Size & Weight:** Usually 6–12 inches in mountain streams. Can weigh up to 5 lbs in larger waters.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** During the fall spawn, males develop a hooked lower jaw (kype) and brilliant orange-to-red bellies.
**Habitat:** Biological indicators of high water quality; found in cold, clean, highly oxygenated mountain streams.
**Behavior:** Extremely shy visual hunters that hide at the sight of shadows.
