Species Description

**Description:** A hardy tree with dark, deeply furrowed bark resembling alligator skin; extremely drought and fire tolerant.
**Size:** Grows 50 to 80 feet tall.
**Identification:** Features large, wavy-edged leaves that lack the sharp lobes of other oaks.
**Wildlife Value:** Produces large, heavy acorns that are a primary food source for black bears and turkeys on high ridges.
**Habitat:** Dominant on steep, well-drained rocky slopes overlooking the Allegheny Reservoir.
