Species Description

**Description:** A large shrub or small tree producing long, drooping clusters of small, astringent dark red-to-black fruits.
**Size:** 10 to 20 feet tall.
**Wildlife Value:** A staple for fall-migrating birds. Raw fruit is very tart but historically used for jellies and wines.
**Identification:** Long flower clusters (racemes) and leaves with two tiny glands at the base of the blade.
**Habitat:** Stream banks, forest edges, and rocky slopes.
