Species Description
**Description:** A small, hardy finch of the Arctic recognized by a distinct bright red cap and a black "goatee" on the chin.
**Size & Weight:** 4.7–5.5 inches long. Weighs 0.4–0.6 oz.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Males have a pale pink wash on the breast and rump; females lack this pink coloration.
**Behavior:** Nomadic winter visitors that travel in large, swirling flocks. They are capable of storing seeds in an esophageal pouch to eat later in sheltered areas.
**Habitat:** Forest edges and meadows, often feeding on birch and alder catkins.
