Species Description
**Description:** Our smallest woodpecker, identified by a stubby beak that is shorter than the width of its head.
**Size & Weight:** 5.5–6.7 inches long. Weighs 0.7–1 oz.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Males have a small red patch on the nape; females do not.
**Behavior:** Forages on tiny weed stalks and thin outer branches that cannot support larger woodpeckers.
**Habitat:** Ubiquitous; common in woodlots, orchards, and brushy areas along streams.
