Eastern Box Turtle

Species Description
**Description:** A land-dwelling turtle with a high, domed shell and a hinged bottom (plastron) that allows it to "box" itself in completely.
**Size:** Shell length of 4 to 7 inches.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Males usually have bright red eyes and a concave bottom shell; females have brown or yellow eyes and a flat plastron.
**Behavior:** Exceptionally long-lived, sometimes exceeding 100 years. If moved, they will spend their entire lives trying to navigate back home.
**Habitat:** Moist woodlands and meadows.
