Field Sparrow

Species Description
**Description:** A massive, powerful woodpecker with a jet-black body, white wing patches, and a flaming red crest.
**Size & Weight:** 16–19 inches long (size of a crow). Weighs 9–12 oz.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Males have a red stripe on the cheek; females have a black cheek stripe.
**Behavior:** Known for leaving large, rectangular holes in trees while searching for carpenter ants. Their call is a loud, wild, laughing "wuck-wuck-wuck."
**Habitat:** Mature forests with large dead and dying trees for foraging and nesting.
