**Description:** A small, reddish-brown salamander with a bright white belly covered in distinct black spots.
**Size:** 2 to 4 inches long.
**Identification:** One of the only salamanders in the world with only four toes on its hind feet. Features a constriction at the base of the tail where it is designed to break off.
**Behavior:** Capable of voluntarily dropping its tail to distract predators. Specialists of high-elevation Sphagnum moss.
**Habitat:** Acidic bog edges and high-elevation wetlands.
