Ghost Pipe

(Monotropa uniflora)

Ghost Pipe

Species Description

**Description:** A translucent white, wax-like plant that lacks chlorophyll, giving it a ghostly appearance on the forest floor.
**Size:** Grows 4 to 10 inches tall.
**Behavior:** A "mycoheterotroph" that steals energy from forest fungi attached to tree roots. Because it doesnโ€™t need sunlight, it thrives in deep shade.
**Identification:** Features a single, nodding white flower on a scaly stem. The entire plant turns jet black after blooming or when handled.
**Habitat:** Deepest, most shaded parts of the forest interior.
