Species Description

**Description:** A large wasp with a black-and-yellow body and an exceptionally long, hair-like "tail" (ovipositor) that can reach 4 inches in length.
**Size:** Body length of 1.5 to 2 inches; total length with tail can reach 6 inches.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Only females possess the long ovipositor; males are smaller and lack the "tail."
**Behavior:** Despite their intimidating look, they cannot sting humans. The ovipositor is used to drill into solid wood to lay eggs on beetle larvae.
**Habitat:** Mature hardwood forests containing dead and dying trees.
