Species Description
**Description:** A massive, ghostly owl with a huge circular facial disk, yellow eyes, and a white "bowtie" marking under the chin.
**Size & Weight:** The largest owl by length in North America, reaching 24–33 inches. Weighs 1.5–4 lbs.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Females are noticeably larger and heavier than males.
**Conservation:** Rare / Species of Concern. A boreal specialist that occasionally "irrupts" into ANF hemlock stands during extreme winters.
**Behavior:** Capable of plunging feet-first through several feet of snow to catch hidden rodents based solely on hearing.
