**Description:** A large orange butterfly with black spots and shimmering silver patches on the wing underside.

**Sexual Dimorphism:** Males are brighter orange; females are darker with more extensive black markings.
**Life Cycle:** Caterpillars feed exclusively on Violets at night. They hatch in the fall and immediately hibernate until spring.
**Habitat:** Meadows, forest openings, and fields containing Violets.
