Species Description

**Description:** A tall, multi-stemmed native shrub producing large, sweet, blue-to-black fruits in mid-summer.
**Size:** Typically 6 to 12 feet tall.
**Wildlife Value:** One of the most important summer food plants in the forest; fruits are sought by everything from bears to cedar waxwings.
**Identification:** Features glossy, oval leaves and bell-shaped white flowers. Foliage turns a spectacular fire-engine red in autumn.
**Habitat:** Acidic high-plateau wetlands and Sphagnum bogs.
