Species Description

**Description:** A large, sprawling shrub with massive heart-shaped leaves and flat-topped clusters of tiny white flowers.
**Size:** 6 to 12 feet tall; branches can span much wider.
**Behavior:** Arching branches often take root where they touch the ground, creating loops that can "hobble" or trip hikers.
**Identification:** Features very large (up to 8 inch) leaves that turn deep burgundy-purple in autumn.
**Habitat:** Understory of cool, moist hardwood and hemlock forests.
