Indian Cucumber-root

(Medeola virginiana)

Indian Cucumber-root

Species Description

**Description:** A woodland plant with two tiers of leaves and small, nodding yellow flowers that produce purple berries.
**Size:** Grows 8 to 20 inches tall.
**Historical Use:** The crisp, white rhizome (root) tastes like cucumber and was a historical food source; harvesting is now discouraged as it kills the plant.
**Identification:** Features a unique "pagoda-like" tier structure; a second tier of leaves only appears when the plant is mature enough to flower.
**Habitat:** Rich, moist forests alongside trilliums and bellworts.
