Species Description
**Description:** A vibrant wildflower with specialized leaves (bracts) that look like they have been dipped in bright red paint.
**Size:** Grows 1 to 2 feet tall.
**Behavior:** Partially parasitic; its roots attach to the roots of nearby grasses to steal nutrients. The true flowers are small, green, and hidden inside the red bracts.
**Habits:** A favorite of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird.
**Habitat:** Moist meadows and open clearings with slightly acidic soil.
