**Description:** A succulent wetland plant with glossy heart-shaped leaves and brilliant yellow, buttercup-like flowers.
**Size:** Grows 8 to 24 inches tall.
**Identification:** Unlike true buttercups, these have no petals; the showy parts are actually waxy sepals. Stems are thick and hollow.
**Habits:** Among the first wildflowers to bloom in spring-fed seeps and marshes. Provides an essential early nectar source for emerging flies and bees.
**Habitat:** Wet, mucky areas of the Kinzua valley and along slow-moving forest streams.
