Species Description
**Description:** A unique butterfly with dark, velvet-maroon wings bordered by a bright yellow band and small blue spots.
**Size:** Wingspan of 2.2 to 4 inches.
**Behavior:** One of the hardiest butterflies; often seen flying while snow is still on the ground in spring. Hibernates as an adult in tree hollows.
**Identification:** When wings are closed, they mimic charred wood or dead leaves. Prefers tree sap and rotting fruit over nectar.
**Habitat:** Shaded forest interiors and hiking trails.
