Species Description

**Description:** A large, fully aquatic salamander that uniquely keeps its reddish, feathery external gills for its entire life.
**Size:** 8โ€“13 inches long.
**Behavior:** Nocturnal and active year-round; they are the only salamanders known to make a "barking" sound.
**Habitat:** Clear, cold waters of the Allegheny Reservoir and larger tributaries.
