Species Description
**Description:** A large, brownish woodpecker with black barring on the back and a distinct black crescent "necklace" on the chest.
**Size & Weight:** 11–12.5 inches long. Weighs 3–5.6 oz.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Males have a black "moustache" stripe extending from the bill; females lack this stripe.
**Behavior:** Specialized "ant-eaters" with long, barbed tongues; they are frequently seen foraging on the ground. In flight, they show a brilliant yellow flash under the wings.
**Habitat:** Open woodlands and forest edges.
