Species Description

**Description:** A slender, long-winged hawk with a distinct white rump patch, often seen gliding low over open fields.
**Size & Weight:** 16–20 inches long with a 3.5–4 foot wingspan. Weighs 0.7–1.3 lbs.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Extreme. Males are "Grey Ghosts" with pale silver-grey plumage; females are larger and mottled brown.
**Behavior:** Unlike most hawks, they nest on the ground. They hunt using sound as much as sight, possessing an owl-like facial disk.
**Habitat:** Large meadows and grasslands near Buzzard Swamp.
