**Description:** Known as the "Butcherbird," this predatory songbird has a hooked beak, a bold black mask, and silver-grey plumage.
**Size & Weight:** 9–10.5 inches long. Weighs 2–3.3 oz.
**Identification:** Look for the heavy, hawk-like bill. They are larger than the similar Loggerhead Shrike.
**Behavior:** Unique for impaling prey—large insects or small rodents—on thorns or barbed wire to save as a food cache for later.
**Habitat:** Open brushy areas and meadows; uncommon winter visitors from the Arctic.
