Species Description
**Description:** Large insects with red eyes, black bodies, and orange-veined wings that emerge in massive synchronized waves.
**Size:** 1 to 1.5 inches long.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Only males make the buzzing sound using specialized organs called timbals; females have a sharp ovipositor for laying eggs in twigs.
**Life Cycle:** Spend 17 years underground as nymphs feeding on tree root sap before emerging for a few weeks to mate.
**Habitat:** Mature hardwood forests throughout the plateau.
