Phantom Crane Fly

(Bittacomorpha clavipes)

Phantom Crane Fly

Species Description

**Description:** A bizarre insect with black-and-white banded legs that it holds out like outriggers, making it look like a floating phantom in the shadows.
**Size:** Body length up to 1 inch; legs can span up to 2 inches.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Females are generally larger than males.
**Behavior:** They have a weak, fluttering flight and often drift with the wind through shaded areas. The white patches on their legs create an optical illusion that breaks up their silhouette.
**Habitat:** Moist, shaded forest understories and wetlands.
