Species Description

**Description:** Largest woodpecker in the region, featuring a striking red crest.
**Habitat:** Found in mature forests where they dig large, rectangular holes in dead trees for carpenter ants.
**Identification:** Males have a red cheek stripe while females have a black forehead. Their tongue wraps around the skull to cushion the brain during drumming.
