Turtlehead (Pink Phase)

Species Description

**Description:** A large, primitive insect with long, lacy wings and massive, sickle-shaped mandibles (in males).

1. Habitat in the ANF
Found near the clean, fast-moving waters of the Allegheny River. The larvae, known as "Hellgrammites," live under rocks in the river riffles.

2. Behavior
Hellgrammites are a prized bait for Smallmouth Bass fishermen. They are fierce predators with a painful bite. The adult males use their giant mandibles solely for fighting other males and attracting mates.

3. Identification
Look for the large size (up to 5 inches) and the intricate wing venation. Despite their intimidating appearance, the adults are relatively short-lived and harmless to humans.
