Species Description

**Description:** A medium-sized tree named for its nearly circular leaves that flutter or "quake" in the slightest breeze.
**Size:** Typically 40–60 feet tall.
**Wildlife Value:** A primary winter food for Ruffed Grouse (buds) and Beavers (bark). It is an essential "pioneer" species after fires.
**Identification:** Features smooth, greenish-white bark that resembles birch but does not peel in papery strips.
**Behavior:** Grows in clonal colonies; an entire hillside of trees may be a single genetic organism connected by one root system.
