Species Description
**Description:** A ragged-winged butterfly named for the silver "?" mark on the underside of its hindwing.
**Size:** Wingspan of 2.2 to 3 inches.
**Identification:** Features distinct hooked wing edges. Occurs in a "dark" summer phase (black hindwings) and a "light" winter phase (orange hindwings).
**Behavior:** Prefers tree sap, rotting fruit, and carrion over flower nectar. Hibernates as an adult under loose bark.
**Habitat:** Moist woodlands and shaded forest interiors.
