**Description:** A deep-bodied, silvery fish of large river systems, named for the elongated ray on its dorsal fin.
**Size & Weight:** Typically 12–18 inches long. Weighs 1–3 lbs.
**Behavior:** Specialized bottom-feeders that use their suction-like mouths to graze on aquatic insect larvae and snails.
**Conservation:** Indicators of high dissolved oxygen; sensitive to heavy siltation and river dams.
**Habitat:** Prefers the clear, moderate currents of the Allegheny and Clarion River main channels.
