Species Description

**Description:** A small, chunky rodent with a very short tail and a distinct reddish-brown stripe running down its back.
**Size & Weight:** 4.5–6 inches long. Weighs 0.7–1.4 oz.
**Behavior:** Active year-round, even under deep snow. They are a primary food source for forest predators like Owls, Hawks, and Weasels.
**Identification:** Also known as Gapper's Red-backed Vole. They have a more "blunt" face and smaller eyes than mice.
**Habitat:** Common in mature forests with thick leaf litter and mossy ground.
