Northern Red-Bellied Snake

Species Description
**Description:** A tiny, secretive snake with a gray-to-brown back and a brilliant, fire-red belly. They often have three pale spots behind the head.
**Size:** 8 to 11 inches long (about the size of a pencil).
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Females grow longer than males; males have proportionally longer tails.
**Behavior:** Completely harmless slug-eaters. They often "play dead" or perform a defensive "snarl" by curling their upper lip.
**Habitat:** Moist woodlands and gardens, hiding under logs and leaf litter.
