Species Description

**Description:** A tiny bird with a blue-gray back, rusty-orange belly, and a bold black eye-line; acts like a nimble acrobat on tree trunks.
**Size & Weight:** 4.3–4.7 inches long. Weighs 0.3–0.5 oz.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Males have a solid black cap; females have a gray cap.
**Behavior:** Famous for "plastering" the entrance of their nest holes with sticky conifer resin to deter predators. Call sounds like a tiny tin trumpet.
**Habitat:** Highly associated with coniferous forests and Eastern Hemlock stands.
