Species Description
**Description:** A medium-sized hawk of wet woodlands, featuring a barred rufous chest and distinct black-and-white checkered wings.
**Size & Weight:** 17–24 inches long with a 3-foot wingspan. Weighs 1.1–1.9 lbs.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Females are larger and heavier than males.
**Identification:** Look for translucent "windows" near the wingtips when soaring. They are smaller and more slender than the Red-tailed Hawk.
**Behavior:** Highly vocal, frequently giving a loud, two-parted "kee-yer" call. They often return to the exact same nest site for decades.
**Habitat:** Mature forests near swamps, river oxbows, and beaver ponds.
