Species Description
**Description:** Smaller than a Gray Squirrel, featuring reddish-brown fur, a white belly, and a bold white eye-ring.
**Size & Weight:** 11–14 inches long (including tail). Weighs 7–9 oz.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Monomorphic; sexes look identical.
**Identification:** Much more aggressive and energetic than Gray squirrels; often grows prominent ear tufts in winter.
**Behavior:** Known as the "spirit of the hemlocks." Highly vocal and territorial; will scold intruders with a rapid, chattering trill.
**Habitat:** Favors coniferous and mixed forests, particularly stands of Eastern Hemlock and White Pine.
