Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Species Description
**Description:** A tiny, metallic green bird with a long, needle-like beak; the only hummingbird species that breeds in the region.
**Size & Weight:** 3–3.5 inches long. Weighs roughly 0.1 oz (less than a penny).
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Males have a brilliant, iridescent red throat (gorget) and a forked tail; females have a plain white throat and blunt tail.
**Behavior:** Highest metabolism of any animal; only bird capable of flying backwards. Arrives in the ANF just as Jewelweed begins to bloom.
**Habitat:** Forest openings, edges, and gardens.
