Species Description

**Description:** A small, well-camouflaged owl with prominent "ear" tufts; occurs in grey or rusty-red color phases.
**Size & Weight:** 7–10 inches tall (roughly the size of a pint glass). Weighs 4–8 oz.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Females are slightly larger and heavier than males.
**Behavior:** Masters of camouflage that stretch their bodies to look like branch stubs. Call is a haunting whinny or low trill.
**Habitat:** Forest edges and riparian corridors near the Allegheny River where hollow trees are available.
