Species Description

**Description:** A medium-sized owl of open grasslands; features small, nearly invisible ear tufts and large yellow eyes set in dark facial patches.
**Size & Weight:** 13–17 inches long. Weighs 7–17 oz.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Females are larger and have more heavy dark streaking than males.
**Conservation:** Rare / Species of Concern. Highly dependent on large, undisturbed grassy landscapes for nesting and wintering.
**Behavior:** Unlike most owls, they are frequently active during the day (diurnal), flying with a moth-like rowing wingbeat.
**Habitat:** Large meadows and marshes; look for them at Buzzard Swamp in winter.
