Species Description

**Description:** A large brown butterfly with a prominent, irregular silver patch on the underside of its hindwings.
**Size:** Wingspan of 1.75 to 2.5 inches.
**Behavior:** Fast, erratic flight pattern. Caterpillars live in protective shelters made by tying leaves together with silk.
**Identification:** Look for golden-orange spots on the upper wings and the metallic silver "smudge" underneath.
**Habitat:** Forest openings, edges, and near campgrounds.
