Species Description

**Description:** An unusual turtle with a flat, leathery shell that feels like sandpaper, and a long, snorkel-like snout.
**Size:** Females are much larger, reaching 18 inches; males typically reach 9 inches.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Females are nearly twice the size of males and have different shell mottling.
**Behavior:** Extremely fast swimmers. They can absorb nearly 70% of their oxygen through their skin while submerged.
**Habitat:** Allegheny River areas with sandy or muddy bottoms.
