Species Description

**Description:** A parasitic plant lacking chlorophyll that resembles a cluster of upright, scaly tan-to-brown pinecones.
**Size:** Grows 3 to 10 inches tall.
**Life Cycle:** It is a "mycoparasite" that steals all nutrients from the root systems of Oak trees.
**Wildlife Value:** A favorite spring food for Black Bears emerging from hibernation; it acts as a natural laxative.
**Identification:** Features small yellow flowers that emerge from between the scales in spring.
**Habitat:** Found exclusively on the forest floor under Oak trees.
