**Description:** A unique coniferous tree that behaves like a deciduous one; its soft needles turn brilliant gold before dropping every autumn.
**Size:** Can reach heights of 40–80 feet.
**Identification:** Soft needles grow in brush-like clusters. The tree appears "dead" in winter as it is the only local conifer that loses its needles.
**Wildlife Value:** The rot-resistant wood was historically used for snowshoes and fence posts.
**Habitat:** Cold-climate specialist found in northern bogs and wet, acidic soils.
