**Description:** A low-growing evergreen shrub with leathery leaves and incredibly fragrant white-to-pink flowers.
**Size:** Prostrate, trailing plant only 2 to 4 inches tall.
**Behavior:** Famous for a powerful, spicy fragrance often smelled before the plant is seen. One of the very first spring flowers to bloom.
**Identification:** Look for fuzzy, rust-colored stems and tough, oval leaves that remain green all winter.
**Habitat:** Dry, acidic soils, often on hillsides under oak and pine trees.
