Species Description

**Description:** A medium-sized orange and black butterfly that acts as a "Mullerian mimic" of the Monarch.
**Size:** Wingspan of 2.5 to 3.4 inches (smaller than a Monarch).
**Identification:** Distinguished by a thin black horizontal line that crosses the veins on the hindwing.
**Behavior:** Unlike the soaring Monarch, the Viceroy has a faster, more "flapping" flight pattern.
**Habitat:** Found near wetlands and stream banks where Willows—the caterpillar host plant—are abundant.
