Species Description

**Description:** A freshwater mussel with a yellow or green shell featuring distinct, wavy emerald-colored rays.
**Size:** Shell length of 2 to 3.5 inches.
**Behavior:** Uses a fleshy lure that looks like a small minnow to trick fish into coming close enough to disperse its larvae (glochidia).
**Conservation:** Indicator of high water quality; mussels act as the "livers" of the river.
**Habitat:** Found in the riffles and runs of the Allegheny River.
