**Description:** A nocturnal bird with mottled brown feathers providing perfect camouflage against leaf litter.
**Size & Weight:** 8.5–10 inches long. Weighs 1.5–2.5 oz.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Males have large white patches on the outer tail feathers; females have smaller, buff-colored patches.
**Behavior:** More often heard than seen, repeating their own name in a rhythmic whistle. They synchronize egg-laying with moon cycles.
**Habitat:** Deciduous or mixed forests with open understories.
