Species Description

**Description:** A low-growing, prickly native shrub that produces translucent, pendulous fruits.
**Size:** Reaches 3–5 feet in height.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Flowers are hermaphroditic (possessing both male and female organs) and are pollinated by early-season bees.
**Habitat:** Thrives in the rocky, shaded understory of hardwood and hemlock forests.
**Identification:** Look for three-lobed leaves and berries covered in soft, hair-like prickles that soften as the fruit ripens.
