Species Description

**Description:** A very fuzzy caterpillar with black ends and a rusty-brown middle band; the larval stage of the Isabella Tiger Moth.
**Size:** Larvae grow to 2 inches; adult moths have a 2 inch wingspan.
**Sexual Dimorphism:** Adult male moths have more yellow on the hindwings than females.
**Life Cycle:** Overwinters as a caterpillar. Survives being frozen solid by producing natural "antifreeze" in its blood.
**Habitat:** Common on forest roads and trails in autumn while searching for hibernation sites.
**Behavior:** Curls into a tight ball when touched. Folklore predicts winter severity by the width of the brown band.
